FROSTBURG, MD – A devastating house fire in Frostburg has resulted in the death of one individual, prompting a thorough investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Allegany Combined County Criminal (C3I) Unit. The incident occurred early Monday morning at a residence located at 210 Welsh Hill Road.
Responding to the scene around 3:45 a.m., the Frostburg Fire Department, aided by nearby fire companies, battled the three-alarm fire. It took approximately 60 firefighters fifteen minutes to bring the blaze under control. After extinguishing the fire, a deceased occupant was discovered within the single-family dwelling.
The victim is set to be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and for positive identification. Initial findings suggest the fire originated in the basement garage, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation. It remains unclear whether smoke alarms were installed in the home.
Two other occupants of the house managed to escape unharmed. There are ongoing verifications of reports that the deceased might have re-entered the burning home after initially escaping.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with the Frostburg community after a tough morning. This is another tragic reminder to check your smoke alarms, have an escape plan, and once you and your loved ones get out, stay out.”
The Frostburg City Police Department is also involved in this joint investigation, which is standard procedure for fatal fires in the area.
