GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Gaston County reported its second rabies case of 2025.
According to the police department, officials received a call around 7 a.m. on Feb. 26 about a family whose two dogs killed a raccoon in their yard in the 1300 block of Dumbarton Road in Gastonia.
No humans contacted the raccoon, officials said. Both dogs were on their current rabies vaccination and received boosters shortly after the incident.
The raccoon was tested at the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh where it tested positive for rabies. The neighborhood was notified of the positive rabies result.
“The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all pet’s health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their owners and community,” officials said.
The first rabies case of 2025 in Gaston County was confirmed on Jan. 14 from an incident involving a fox on Jan. 9.
