Fatal Box Elder County pedestrian accident death of Matthew R. Kimball – Obituary
Authorities have identified a South Ogden man who was killed while walking along I-84 in Box Elder County near the Utah-Idaho border.
Matthew R. Kimball, 48, was fatally struck by two semi-trucks on the night of Thursday, February 20. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, Kimball had left his disabled vehicle and was walking along the roadway when the incident occurred.
Earlier that evening, Kimball had approached a Utah Highway Patrol trooper responding to an unrelated jackknifed semi-truck crash. He informed the officer that his car had broken down and requested a ride into town. The trooper advised him to return to his vehicle and wait inside.
However, instead of going back to his car, Kimball continued walking past it for several miles. Around 8 p.m., the first semi-truck encountered him in the dark. The driver attempted to swerve at the last moment but was unable to avoid contact. The truck’s side mirror struck Kimball on the head, knocking him to the ground.
A second truck, traveling directly behind the first, did not see Kimball and struck him, leading investigators to conclude that this impact caused his death.
