An 87-year-old woman, Marilyn Sommer, was fatally shot inside her home in Chantilly, Virginia, early Friday morning. Authorities arrested her husband, Douglas Sommer, 88, in connection with the incident.
According to Fairfax County police, the shooting took place around 6 a.m. at a residence on the 13000 block of Pennypacker Lane following a domestic dispute. Officers arrived to find Marilyn Sommer suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Captain Kent Bailey of the Fairfax County Police Department stated that the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Douglas Sommer was taken into custody and is currently being held without bond. He faces charges of second-degree murder and firearms violations.
The couple’s daughter, who was present in the home during the shooting, called 911. She was not injured. Investigators are continuing to gather details to determine the circumstances leading up to the fatal encounter.
