Mass Shooting Outside The Collective in Midtown Oklahoma City Leaves Seven Wounded, One in Critical Condition; Police Investigating Motive and Suspect(s) as City Grapples with Aftermath

A horrifying burst of gunfire disrupted the normally vibrant atmosphere of Midtown Oklahoma City on the night of Monday, May 5, 2025, when a mass shooting outside The Collective food hall and bar resulted in seven people being wounded, one of them critically. As the city reels from the shock of yet another mass casualty incident, law enforcement authorities are intensifying their investigation into the motive, potential suspects, and broader implications for public safety in the area.

According to a statement from the Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD), officers were dispatched just after 8:20 p.m. to the intersection of Northwest 10th Street and North Hudson Avenue, a popular nightlife area known for its diverse food offerings, trendy bars, and pedestrian-friendly environment. The Collective, a well-frequented food hall that features multiple independent eateries and a rooftop bar, was the focal point of the attack.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found chaos: shattered glass, overturned patio furniture, patrons running for cover, and several individuals lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were quickly summoned, and victims were triaged at the scene before being transported to local hospitals. One victim remains in critical condition at OU Health, while six others are being treated for injuries that range from minor to serious.

    A Peaceful Evening Turns Violent

Witnesses described a sudden eruption of gunfire, catching many off guard. “It sounded like fireworks at first,” said Jenna Michaels, a patron who was seated near the patio with friends. “Then we saw people screaming and ducking under tables. It was total panic.”

Video footage from surveillance cameras in the area and recordings from patrons’ mobile phones are currently being analyzed by OCPD investigators. Initial reports indicate that the gunfire may have come from a vehicle that sped away from the scene immediately after the shooting. Authorities have not confirmed whether the attack was targeted or random.

    Victim Identification and Status

As of Tuesday morning, the identities of the seven victims have not been released pending family notification. However, hospital officials confirmed that the critically wounded individual is an adult male in his 30s who underwent emergency surgery overnight. The other six victims include four women and two men ranging in age from their early 20s to late 40s.

OCPD spokesperson Sgt. Megan Morgan stated during a press briefing, “We are currently working with families and hospitals to confirm identities and notify next of kin. We will release names as soon as it is appropriate and respectful to do so.”

If names are released, this article will be updated to include all victims prominently.

    Investigation Underway

The Oklahoma City Police Department has formed a special task force that includes homicide and gang units, though officials emphasized that it is too early to speculate on a motive. “All possibilities are being considered, including personal disputes, organized crime, or even mistaken identity,” Sgt. Morgan said.

Officers are canvassing the area for witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and appealing to the public for any information that might assist the investigation. Anyone with tips is encouraged to contact the OCPD tip line at (405) 297-1200 or submit information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

    Community Response and Political Reaction

Mayor David Holt expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a public statement early Tuesday morning. “This is a heartbreaking night for Oklahoma City. We stand with the victims and their families. Our community is shaken, but we will support one another and ensure justice is served.”

City council members and state legislators have echoed the mayor’s sentiments while also calling for renewed discussions around gun safety, urban policing, and mental health support. “We must not let this moment pass without action,” said Councilwoman JoBeth Hamon, whose district includes parts of Midtown. “Oklahoma City deserves to be a safe place for everyone — to dine, to gather, and to live.”

    Local Businesses on Edge

The Collective announced via social media that it will be closed for at least the next two days as staff recovers and authorities continue their investigation. Other local businesses in the area are reportedly increasing private security and reviewing safety procedures.

Midtown business owner Tyler Green, who operates a boutique across the street, said he is heartbroken. “This neighborhood has worked so hard to build a sense of community. Seeing it shattered in a moment like this — it’s devastating.”

    A History of Resilience

Though rare, Oklahoma City is no stranger to violent tragedy, having endured the 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing, which killed 168 people and injured hundreds more. Community leaders often cite that event when discussing the city’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

“We’ve been through hard times before,” said Pastor Lisa Andrews of the Midtown Unity Church. “Our city has a spirit that doesn’t break — it binds us together.”

    What’s Next?

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are expected to provide further updates throughout the week. Crisis counselors have been made available to affected families and bystanders, and the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office has indicated that it is standing by to file charges as soon as a suspect is apprehended.

For now, Oklahoma City remains in a state of mourning, searching for answers — and for hope.
