Fatal Gilbertville car crash death of Kelli Schmitz – Obituary
Authorities have identified Kelli Schmitz, a 14-year-old Don Bosco High School student from Jesup, as the victim of a deadly crash that occurred Tuesday morning near Gilbertville.
According to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place around 7:10 a.m. on Poyner Road in the 8000 block when Schmitz’s Pontiac Sunfire collided with a Jeep Cherokee. The impact left Schmitz trapped inside her vehicle. Emergency responders transported her to MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 22-year-old Kelsey Murphy of La Porte City, managed to escape after the vehicle caught fire and sustained only minor injuries.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances leading to the crash. Meanwhile, an online fundraiser has been established through GoFundMe to support a memorial fund in Schmitz’s honor.
The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office received assistance at the scene from several emergency agencies, including the Iowa State Patrol, MercyOne Ambulance, AirCare, and first responders from Gilbertville and Evansdale.
