Chicago Mother Charged with Murder After Allegedly Throwing 2-Month-Old Son to the Floor, Prosecutors Say

CHICAGO – June 7, 2025 — A heartbreaking and disturbing case has gripped the city of Chicago following the arrest of 25-year-old Lauryn Shakespeare, who now faces first-degree murder charges in the death of her infant son. Prosecutors allege that Shakespeare threw her 2-month-old baby, Loyal, onto the floor, causing fatal injuries. The shocking details emerged during a recent court filing and have sparked outrage and sorrow throughout the community.

The incident began on June 2, when Shakespeare called emergency services to her apartment on North Ashland Avenue, claiming that her son was unresponsive. She told police that Loyal had been sleeping beside her and that when she woke up, he was no longer breathing. The baby was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where medical staff worked desperately to save him. Tragically, he was pronounced dead about an hour after arrival.

While initial reports may have suggested a sudden medical episode or accident, investigators quickly began to question the credibility of Shakespeare’s version of events. According to police, her story changed multiple times during questioning, raising significant concerns about what had actually happened in the moments leading up to the baby’s death.

An autopsy performed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed grim findings: a cerebral hematoma and a linear skull fracture on the right side of Loyal’s head. These traumatic injuries, authorities say, were “inconsistent” with Shakespeare’s explanation. The nature of the injuries led investigators and prosecutors to believe the infant had been subjected to deliberate, violent force.

Based on the forensic evidence and conflicting statements, prosecutors filed charges of first-degree murder and murder against Shakespeare. In court documents, they allege that she intended to seriously harm or kill her son by throwing him against the floor—an act they say directly caused his death.

On Friday, Shakespeare was expected to appear for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, but she was hospitalized for an undisclosed medical condition and did not attend. Details surrounding her hospitalization have not been publicly released.

The case has sent shockwaves through Chicago and beyond, reigniting conversations around maternal mental health, child welfare, and the systems in place to protect vulnerable children. Friends and neighbors expressed disbelief over the allegations, with some calling for a deeper examination of how the situation may have escalated to such a tragic point.

“This is something no one could ever prepare for—just heartbreaking,” one community member said. “We need to make sure babies like Loyal are safe and that moms who are struggling have real help before it’s too late.”

Child protective services and local advocacy groups are now also reviewing the case to determine whether there were any previous reports or signs of neglect or abuse that might have gone unnoticed.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about Shakespeare or Loyal’s short life to come forward. Meanwhile, many in the community are mourning the loss of a baby who, in just two months of life, should have known only love and care.

Shakespeare remains hospitalized under watch, and further legal proceedings will take place once she is medically cleared. The court is expected to schedule a new detention hearing in the coming days. If convicted of first-degree murder, she could face a life sentence.

This tragic case serves as a grim reminder of the hidden struggles that may exist behind closed doors—and the devastating consequences when those struggles erupt into violence.
