Massive Missile and Drone Attack Hits Kyiv Amid Prisoner Swap, Injuring Dozens

Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, endured a massive and relentless assault overnight into early Saturday as Russian forces launched a large-scale drone and missile attack that injured at least 15 people, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack unfolded amid sounds of explosions and machine gun fire echoing throughout the city, forcing many residents to seek shelter in subway stations for safety. This assault struck just hours after a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine began—a rare moment of cooperation in a conflict that has raged for over three years with limited signs of de-escalation.

The assault on Kyiv was staggering in scale. Russian forces launched 14 ballistic missiles and deployed approximately 250 Shahed drones targeting the city, marking one of the most extensive combined missile and drone strikes the Ukrainian capital has faced. Despite the overwhelming nature of the attack, Ukrainian air defenses performed valiantly, intercepting six missiles and neutralizing 245 drones. The defense efforts split roughly evenly between kinetic interceptions—shooting down 128 drones—and electronic warfare measures that disrupted and neutralized 117 drones.

The Kyiv City Military Administration described the attack as one of the most massive in recent memory. Debris from intercepted missiles and drones rained down across at least six city districts, causing destruction and panic. Among the hardest hit was the Obolon district, where a residential building sustained significant damage and at least five residents were wounded. Fires ignited in the Solomianskyi district, prompting emergency crews to respond swiftly.

Eyewitnesses described the harrowing experience. Local resident Yurii Bondarchuk recounted how the air raid sirens sounded as usual, followed by the ominous buzz of drones overhead. Moments later, explosions shattered the night, sending glass flying and damaging balconies, windows, and doors. “The balcony is totally wiped out,” he said, standing in the darkness as firefighters battled the blaze. The air raid alert lasted more than seven hours, warning of ongoing missile and drone threats throughout the night.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, warned the public prior to the attack that over 20 Russian strike drones were inbound. During the assault, he confirmed that drone debris fell on a shopping mall and a residential building in the Obolon district. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to deal with fires, injuries, and damage caused by the relentless barrage.

This devastating attack occurred in the immediate aftermath of a prisoner swap agreed upon by Russia and Ukraine at a high-level meeting in Istanbul just days earlier. The exchange marked the first phase of a larger deal involving the release of 1,000 prisoners from each side. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that 390 Ukrainians had returned home in this initial phase, with more releases expected over the weekend, making it the largest swap of the war so far. Russia confirmed receiving the same number of detainees.

The swap took place at the border with Belarus, in northern Ukraine. Russian detainees were reportedly transported to Belarus for medical treatment following their release. While the prisoner exchange was a rare diplomatic breakthrough, it did not lead to an immediate reduction in hostilities. Fighting continued unabated along the approximately 1,000-kilometer front line, where tens of thousands of soldiers have died and the stakes remain high.

Diplomatic efforts remain ongoing but fraught with complexity. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called the prisoner swap a “confidence-building measure” and said that parties had agreed in principle to hold further talks. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated there was no agreement yet on where the next round of negotiations would take place, indicating continued diplomatic maneuvering. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated Moscow would present a draft peace agreement once the prisoner exchange concluded, aiming for a “sustainable, long-term, comprehensive” settlement.

European leaders have criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for dragging negotiations while simultaneously escalating military pressure to capture more Ukrainian territory. Despite these efforts, the Istanbul meeting made clear that fundamental disagreements persist, especially regarding key issues such as ceasefire implementation, territorial sovereignty, and security guarantees. Ukraine and its Western allies emphasize a temporary ceasefire as an essential initial step toward lasting peace, a proposal Moscow has yet to embrace fully.

Military dynamics remain intense. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down 788 Ukrainian drones away from frontlines between May 20 and May 23. In turn, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 175 Shahed and decoy drones alongside a ballistic missile since late Thursday, underscoring the scale and persistence of aerial attacks.

The situation in Kyiv highlights the brutal reality of this protracted conflict, where moments of diplomacy coexist with episodes of devastating violence. The city’s resilience and robust air defenses have repeatedly thwarted attempts to cripple its infrastructure and morale, but the toll on civilians remains high. Injuries, property damage, and the psychological trauma of nighttime raids compound the challenges faced by residents enduring nearly three years of war.

As the dust settles from this latest assault, the world watches closely to see if these prisoner swaps can lay the groundwork for further negotiations or if the cycle of attack and retaliation will continue. For Kyiv and its people, the priority remains survival and hope—hope for peace amid the storm of conflict, and hope that one day the skies will be free from drones and missiles threatening their homes.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and heed warnings from authorities as the situation develops. The National Weather Service and military officials continue monitoring for further threats. Emergency services remain on high alert, prepared to respond swiftly to any new incidents.

In summary, the large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s conflict. Despite diplomatic gestures like the prisoner swap, fighting continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians and infrastructure. The resilience of Kyiv’s people and defenders remains steadfast, even as the path toward peace remains uncertain. Ongoing international attention and support are crucial as the situation evolves, with hopes that diplomacy will eventually prevail over violence.

For continuous updates, residents and observers should rely on official channels such as the National Weather Service, Ukrainian government announcements, and verified news sources. Staying informed and prepared is essential in these turbulent times for Kyiv and the broader region.
