LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Gina Pedrick went through seven different foster homes. She was put in her first home at 11 years old and didn’t find her forever home until three years later.
She moved to that forever home in the middle of the night. Her prior foster home has been shut down due to drug use that she didn’t know about. At the time, she didn’t know she would be moving into her permanent home.
“Going through foster care you build up this defense where you’re like, ‘I don’t want to be close to anybody, I’m not unpacking my suitcase’,” Pedrick said.
Her foster mother, Katherine Ann Moses, assured her this time was different. She told her to unpack her suitcase and get comfortable because she’ll be there for a long time.
Her foster parents adopted her nine months later. Pedrick said that decision changed her life, and she always encourages people to consider becoming foster parents.
“People tend to close down, which is completely understandable, when they know that they can’t have children or they know there’s no chance of them having children and I’ve always tried to tell people try not to completely close down because there’s a group of kids out there who would love to have parents,” Pedrick said.
Moses died seven years ago.
Pedrick is now a mom of four and is going to school to become a preacher. We asked her what she would say this Mother’s Day to Moses if she was still here.
“If I could see her or tell her anything it would be ‘thank you’ because I get to be the woman I am, I have the passion I have and I get to be the mother I am, thanks to her,” Pedrick said.
