A tragic incident unfolded this morning at McConnell Middle School, located at 550 Ozora Road in Loganville, as a student reportedly took their own life in what authorities are calling an apparent suicide.
Emergency responders were called to the school early Monday morning, where the student was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. Despite efforts to render aid, the student was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has confirmed the death and issued a heartfelt statement to families, urging parents and guardians to speak openly with their children during this time of grief and emotional distress.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students today,” the district said in a message sent to parents. “Our hearts go out to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy. We encourage all families to have conversations with their children and seek support if needed, as we mourn together as a community.”
Crisis counselors have been made available at McConnell Middle School to support students and staff as they process the shocking news. Additional mental health resources are being provided both in person and online for those who may be struggling.
The identity of the student has not been released out of respect for the family’s privacy.
Community leaders and mental health professionals are reminding families that it’s crucial to watch for signs of emotional distress in children and teens, especially following events like this that can deeply impact young people.
