The Acadiana medical community and beyond are mourning the loss of a deeply respected physician, beloved father, and devoted friend — Dr. Vitalis Okechukwu, affectionately known by his patients and colleagues as “Dr. OK.” Dr. Okechukwu passed away on March 21, 2025, in Houston at the age of 54
A memorial service to honor his life and legacy is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, at the Cecil J. Picard Center, located at 200 E. Devalcourt Street in Lafayette. The service will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., welcoming all who wish to pay their respects to a man who gave so much to the health and well-being of others.
Dr. OK was an infectious disease internist who dedicated his career to treating patients across several Acadiana hospitals, including facilities in Lafayette and Opelousas. With over two decades of service in the field, he earned a sterling reputation not only for his clinical expertise but for the compassionate, personable care he offered to every patient who walked through his door.
“He was well loved by his patients and will be greatly missed,” his obituary reads — a sentiment echoed by countless colleagues, friends, and families whose lives he touched.
Dr. Okechukwu was more than a physician — he was a healer, mentor, and community pillar. Known for his warm demeanor and ever-present smile, he brought comfort and reassurance to those facing some of life’s most difficult health battles. His nickname “Dr. OK” came not just from his initials, but from the calming, confident way he cared for others. He had an extraordinary ability to make people feel that — no matter the diagnosis — everything was going to be OK.
A man of faith and humility, Dr. OK led with grace, treating every patient with dignity and advocating for equitable healthcare for underserved communities. He mentored younger physicians and nurses, always taking time to share knowledge and encourage those following in his footsteps.
Dr. Okechukwu is survived by his four cherished children, his seven loving siblings, and his devoted parents. His greatest pride was his family, whom he adored and supported with unwavering love. His legacy of kindness, service, and dedication will live on in their hearts — and in the countless lives he saved, uplifted, and inspired.
In a world often in need of hope and healing, Dr. Vitalis “Dr. OK” Okechukwu stood as a quiet force of good. His loss is deeply felt across the Acadiana region and beyond. While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life lived with purpose, compassion, and excellence.
May we honor Dr. OK not only in words, but in action — by continuing his example of compassionate care, lifelong learning, and selfless service.
Rest in peace, Dr. Vitalis Okechukwu. Thank you for everything. You were truly one of a kind.
