On March 7, 2025, Detective Azcona and another officer responded to a location near a busy intersection in Newark to question a suspect believed to be in possession of illegal firearms. Before the officers had the chance to step out of their vehicle, the suspect opened fire without warning, striking both officers. At least 18 rounds were fired in the brazen attack.
