A woman was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon following a harrowing dog attack involving three aggressive dogs on the West Side. Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Westwood Avenue and Cedar Street.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the victim, identified only as a woman in her mid-30s, was walking along the sidewalk when three unleashed dogs suddenly charged at her from a nearby yard. Witnesses said the animals, described as large mixed-breed dogs, appeared to be unrestrained and aggressive.
“I just heard her scream,” said neighbor Carla Jennings, who lives across the street from where the attack took place. “I ran outside and saw the dogs surrounding her. One of them had her by the leg, and she was trying to fight them off.”
Quick-thinking bystanders rushed to help the woman, using sticks and loud noises to scare the dogs away. Emergency services arrived within minutes, and paramedics provided immediate aid before transporting the woman to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Officials say she sustained multiple bite wounds, primarily on her legs and arms, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Animal control officers were called to the scene and were able to capture all three dogs shortly after the incident. The animals were taken into custody pending a full investigation. It remains unclear if the dogs had a history of aggression or if they were properly licensed and vaccinated.
“This is a very serious situation,” said Officer Luis Ramirez of the [City Name] Police Department. “We’re conducting a thorough investigation into how and why these dogs were roaming free. It’s fortunate that more people weren’t injured.”
Authorities are working to determine whether the dogs’ owner will face charges. Under city ordinances, pet owners are required to keep their dogs leashed when outside and properly secured on their property. Violations can result in fines, mandatory training, or in some cases, removal of the animals.
Residents in the area say this isn’t the first time the dogs have been seen loose. “We’ve complained before,” said another neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. “Everyone on the block knows those dogs are a problem. We’ve been worried something like this would happen.”
The incident has reignited public discussion around dog safety and responsible pet ownership, with some local leaders calling for stricter enforcement of existing laws.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with additional information or footage of the incident to come forward.
