A Heartbreaking Loss: Remembering the Life of KG Lifer Todd Irwin Jr. – A True Friend, Athlete, and Hero
With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we share the devastating news of the passing of KG Lifer Todd Irwin Jr., a beloved son, friend, and member of the Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) community. Todd, just 13 years old, tragically lost his life in a skateboarding accident, a sudden and heartbreaking event that has left his family, friends, and the entire MKA community in deep mourning and disbelief.
The untimely and unexpected loss of Todd has sent shockwaves through all who knew him, as the impact of his life was immeasurable. Those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him remember him as a bright light, someone who brought joy, laughter, and love into the lives of all around him. Todd’s passing has sparked an outpouring of love and support, as people come together to honor the incredible person he was and to cope with the grief of losing him far too soon.
Todd was much more than just a student at MKA—he was a vibrant spirit who made his presence felt in every room he entered. From his infectious smile to his sense of humor and genuine kindness, Todd left a lasting impression on his classmates, teachers, coaches, and friends. He was a familiar face at MKA from the earliest grades, all the way through to his graduation year, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
One of Todd’s closest friends and fellow member of the MKA Class of 2013, Phil Pannull, shared a moving tribute to Todd, saying, “Todd was a source of laughter and a friend to everyone he met. He was a fantastic athlete, an incredible mind, and always there to help people.” These words perfectly encapsulate the essence of who Todd was: a person who could light up any room, who made people feel seen and heard, and who was always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
Even in the face of such a devastating loss, Todd’s spirit of generosity and selflessness shines through. In keeping with his character, Todd made the ultimate act of compassion in his passing—he became an organ donor. Through this final, selfless gift, Todd’s organs will save the lives of several individuals in need of life-saving transplants. His legacy of caring for others, even in his final moments, will continue to touch the lives of countless people who never had the chance to meet him, and his memory will live on in the lives of those whose lives he saved.
Todd’s mother has graciously shared the arrangements for those who wish to honor his memory and celebrate his life:
- Sunday, April 13th: A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Marrocco Memorial Chapel, located at 470 Colfax Avenue, Clifton, NJ.
- Monday, April 14th: A funeral mass will take place at 10:00 AM at Saint Philip the Apostle Parish, located at 797 Valley Road, also in Clifton, followed by the burial and repast.
For all who knew and loved Todd, this is an opportunity to gather together to pay their respects, share memories, and offer support to one another during this incredibly difficult time. Todd’s mother and loved ones especially appreciate your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
The loss of someone so young, full of life, promise, and potential, is beyond comprehension. However, in the face of such grief, we are reminded of the deep bonds of community, friendship, and love that Todd nurtured during his time with us. His memory will remain etched in our hearts forever, and we will continue to honor his legacy by living with the kindness, generosity, and spirit that he exemplified every day of his life.
May Todd rest in peace, and may his family and friends find strength and comfort in the outpouring of love and support during this unimaginable time of sorrow.
