LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A video circulating social media shows an older man being pushed to the ground and dragged across the floor by two younger men inside Louisville’s temporary Greyhound station.
Greyhound moved its Louisville stop to a strip mall on West Broadway near 12th Street in 2023 after it sold its longtime bus station at 7th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard. Nearly two years after announcing its temporary set up in a west Louisville parking lot, Greyhound is still operating in the same location with no clear move in sight.
The video paints a picture of chaos and violence inside the Greyhound station, and former employee Shadae Cooke said that behavior is common inside and outside the waiting area.
“There’s no security,” she said. “Working in there, it was me by myself. There’s no two people on shift. There’s not three people. One person on shift.”
Cooke said she witnessed people loitering, drinking, fighting and using drugs while working alone at the Greyhound station. She referenced a fight between a passenger and bus driver and several other altercations on the property.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, officers have been called to the location on West Broadway 149 times since Oct. 1.
“(Police) do not want to come to the Greyhound Station,” Cooke said, explaining that officers don’t always respond to their calls. “They said this place is a nuisance. It is a nuisance.”
Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Matt Sanders said the department is aware of the incident captured on video but no officers were called to the location Monday night. Detectives were sent the video through an anonymous tip and is asking for the public’s help to identify the man who “appeared to be the victim of assault.”
Police are asking anyone with any information to call the anonymous crime tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
“We asked the boss every day ‘We need security in this building, in the parking lot, something,’” Cooke said, recalling her time as a Greyhound employee.
A Greyhound spokesperson issued the following statement to WDRB News but didn’t answer questions about when the temporary location would be closed for somewhere permanent:
“We are aware of the incident that occurred in Louisville yesterday and are actively investigating the situation. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers is our top priority.”
The temporary bus station is in Metro Councilman Ken Herndon’s district. In a written statement Tuesday, Herndon said no report has been filed for the incident.
“I trust Greyhound, within whose space this incident occurred, will take the appropriate measures to prevent incidents like this from occurring again and that the employee involved is held accountable for her actions last night,” Herndon said.
