TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police converged on an area high school, and students were placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon.
All was quiet shortly before 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Tamaqua Area High School, but that was a different story a little over an hour before. The reason for the lockdown is not yet clear.
Local and state police could be seen making their way in and out of the building, many of them rifles drawn.
At least two K-9 units were also there, and before 28/22 News crews arrived on the scene, 28/22 News was told a helicopter could be seen circling above.
From what 28/22 News has been told by parents, there was an even heavier presence as students were being sent home, but the reasoning for the lockdown is not yet clear.
“I was nervous the whole time, like after we had to stay in that class because of whatever was happening. Like when they said stay in the 8th period class we were already walking to ninth period,” said Tamaqua Area Middle School Seventh Grade Student Cooper Bush.
“As a parent you start freaking out, and you’re trying to get answers. I texted him right away. I know they’re not allowed to have their phones out all the time, so you’ve gotta be patient, and that was the hardest part. You worry,” Cooper’s father, Adam Bush, added.
28/22 News is still waiting on official word from the school district but will be providing updates as they become available to us.
