BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Many people are enjoying non-meat options this first Friday of Lent.
For the next few weeks, dozens of churches and fire companies all across our area hold annual Lenten fish fries to help raise money.
Check out what they’re serving up at Reliance Fire Company in Berwick.
This is the second week for their popular fish fry.
During Lent, millions of faithful abstain from eating meat in preparation for Easter which is April 20.
“We’re running eight weeks of it, and each week it’s getting better and better. Lines do not stop all day long just like that you see that line right now. And people take out orders and constantly calling that phone. That phone don’t stop ringing,” said John Tigue, Fish Commissioner, Reliance Fire Co.
“I’ve actually been here before with my father. Every year when we come down to visit, we always stop to get fish here. It is fantastic! Especially the mac & cheese,” stated Dalton Ellis, visitor from Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Reliance Fire Company says they serve up 9,000 pounds of fish over the entire lent season.
