(WBRE/WYOU) — During the season of Lent many Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays and pick up fish, shrimp, pierogies, haluski, and more at fish fries and Lenten dinners.
The first Friday in Lent this year is March 7 and the last is April 18. Here is a list of fish fries and Lenten dinners happening in the area:
The Harwood Fire Company in Luzerne County is serving up some Lent favorites with a $12 fish platter, $12 shrimp scampi, six pierogies for $5, mac and cheese, and haluski both $4 each and more. Harwood Fire Company does their fish fry every Friday during Lent. You can order on the phone at 570-599-1508, any order over $30 will require prepayment. Harwood Fire Company is located at 874 Old Street, Hazle Township.
The Reliance Fire Company No. 1 in Berwick, Columbia County is hosting its annual fish fry. You can order any entrée of fried or baked fish, chicken fingers, or shrimp, a choice of potato of French fries or baked potato, and a vegetable of corn, coleslaw, baked beans, mac and cheese, or stewed tomatoes. You can call in your order at 570-752-5621 or fill out an order form and fax it to 570-752-5199. The fire company asks you not to leave an order on voicemail, or they might miss your order. Reliance Fire Company No. 1 is located at 501 West 3rd Street, Berwick. They are open Fridays in Lent from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The American Hose Co #1 in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County will be hosting their Lenten dinner most Fridays in Lent. Serving fried shrimp, haddock, and crab cake dinners at $15. You can also upgrade those to a platter served with green beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, French fries, or mac and cheese, with or without stewed tomatoes. American Hose Co #1 serves from 5:00 p.m. until they sell out with dine-in and take-out options. There will not be dinner on March 14 or April 11 due to it being a meeting night.
The Shavertown Volunteer Fire Department in Luzerne County is holding a Lenten takeout dinner on the first and last Friday of Lent, March 7 and April 18. They are serving potato pancakes, three for $3, haluski, broccoli and cavatelli, and New England clam chowder from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There are no pre-orders, it is first come, first served, and takeout only.
Goodwill Bar and Grille in Danville, Montour County will be serving a fish fry on Friday March 7 from noon until 8:00 p.m., eat in or take-out. They are located at 537 Center Street, Danville.
Harveys Lake Fire and Ambulance Co. in Luzerne County will be hosting a fish fry on Friday March 7 and 28, and April 18. Entry for adults is $18 and children at $14. Pierogies and haluski are also available. There are dine-in and take-out options from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Harveys Lake Social Hall, 4452 Memorial Hwy.
The Old Lycoming Twp. Volunteer Fire Co in Williamsport, Lycoming County is hosting a Lent fish fry every Friday during Lent. They will be serving fried haddock, French fries, coleslaw, applesauce, and a drink. Entry for adults are $13 and children are $10.50. Dine-in and take-out options are available from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 1600 Dewey, Avenue, Williamsport.
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County is hosting Lenten fish dinners on March 14 and 28, and April 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. They will be serving baked haddock, crab cakes, chicken fingers, mac and cheese, stewed tomatoes, coleslaw, and dessert. They are located at 101 North Greenwood Street, Tamaqua.
B3Q Smokehouse in Swoyersville, Luzerne County will host a fish fry every Friday during Lent. A two piece cod dinner with fries, slaw, and Tatar sauce is $12.95. Cod by the piece is $5. Smoked salmon on house or Caesar salad with fries and slaw is $14.95. Twelve smoked shrimp with fries and slaw is $14.50 and 18 fried shrimp tossed in your choice of sauce with fries and slaw is #14.50. They also have New England and Manhattan clam chowder for $7.50. They are located at 245 Owen Street in Swoyersville.
