The community of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, is mourning the loss of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Malley Kenny, a 40-year-old woman whose passing followed a courageous and extended battle with medical complications. Lizzie, known for her vibrant spirit, compassion, and deep connection to everyone she encountered, passed away after years of facing health challenges that she met with grace and bravery. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life filled with love, music, and a profound influence on those lucky enough to have known her.
Born on May 30, 1985, Lizzie was the beloved daughter of Margaret and Thomas Kenny, and grew up in a home filled with love and laughter. Raised in Basking Ridge alongside her three brothers—Matthew, Andrew, and James—Lizzie formed an inseparable bond with her family. The Kennys were a tight-knit family, with a shared love for each other that made them a well-known presence in the community. Lizzie’s energy, joy, and sense of humor were constant forces that bound her family together, and her passing leaves a gap that can never be filled.
A proud graduate of St. James School and St. Elizabeth Academy, Lizzie was always an active participant in her community, where she quickly became known for her infectious personality and ability to bring people together. Her academic success, however, was only a small part of what made Lizzie so special. She was a woman who truly valued relationships, and her friendships—both from childhood and adulthood—were among the most important aspects of her life.
Perhaps one of the most defining aspects of Lizzie’s life was her passion for music. Lizzie was a gifted musician who co-founded the band Thomas Francis Takes His Chances. With her brothers and close friends, she wrote, performed, and shared her musical gifts with the world. Her music was a form of creative expression that allowed her to connect deeply with others, and it became an enduring symbol of her creative energy and emotional depth. Music was more than just a hobby for Lizzie—it was her way of communicating with the world, an outlet that allowed her to express herself in ways words alone couldn’t capture.
As a member of Thomas Francis Takes His Chances, Lizzie not only contributed her musical talent but also helped to create something that brought joy to others. The band was known for its originality and authenticity, traits that Lizzie embodied throughout her life. Her presence within the music scene reflected her passion for art and her desire to inspire others. Through her work, Lizzie touched the lives of countless fans and musicians alike, leaving a lasting mark on the local music community. She was often described as a “soulful” presence—her voice and melodies evoked deep emotion in those who heard them, reflecting her ability to pour her heart into everything she did.
While music played a central role in Lizzie’s life, it was her warm personality and her ability to brighten any room she entered that left the deepest impression. She was known for the joy she radiated in every interaction. Whether she was with family, friends, or strangers, Lizzie’s genuine warmth made people feel special and loved. She had an infectious laugh that made others feel instantly at ease, and her selflessness was a defining quality. Lizzie was always there for the people in her life—offering encouragement, support, and kindness whenever it was needed. Her ability to create bonds with others was unmatched, and her friendship was a gift that those close to her will carry with them forever.
Lizzie’s passing marks the end of a life filled with love, music, and laughter. While her family, friends, and loved ones mourn her loss, they also take comfort in the knowledge that she lived a life that was rich with experiences, creativity, and deep connections. Lizzie is survived by her father, Thomas Kenny, and his wife, Gail; her brothers, Matthew, Andrew, and James; as well as a large extended family who will continue to cherish her memory. The outpouring of love from her family and community speaks to the profound impact she had on everyone she encountered. Her legacy will live on through the memories she created, the music she shared, and the countless lives she touched.
In addition to her immediate family, Lizzie was also reunited with her mother, Margaret, who passed away before her. While this loss is incredibly painful for Lizzie’s family, they find some comfort in the thought that she is now with her mother, her first and most beloved companion. The bond that Lizzie shared with her mother was special—one built on mutual love, support, and understanding—and her passing marks the end of a chapter, but also the beginning of a new, more peaceful chapter for Lizzie in the afterlife.
A visitation for Lizzie will be held on Sunday, March 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home in Basking Ridge. Her funeral Mass will take place the following day, Monday, March 10, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Church, where Lizzie’s life and legacy will be celebrated. Family and friends are invited to gather and reflect on the incredible person Lizzie was and the many ways in which she changed their lives for the better.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, an organization that was close to Lizzie’s heart. Throughout her health struggles, Lizzie had been a strong supporter of organizations that focused on helping others who faced medical challenges similar to hers. The family’s decision to support the National Kidney Foundation is a fitting tribute to Lizzie’s caring nature and her desire to give back to causes that were important to her.
Though Lizzie’s life was cut short, her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Her warmth, compassion, and artistry will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to cross paths with her. Lizzie’s music will live on, continuing to bring joy and reflection to those who hear it. And, above all, the legacy of her love and kindness will serve as a reminder of the power of friendship, family, and human connection.
Rest in peace, Lizzie. Your light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those you left behind, and your spirit will forever guide and inspire us. Your music, your laughter, and your love will never be forgotten.
