Fatal Monroe County car crash death of Alanah Phillips and Zayn Phillips – Obituary
A Michigan woman has been convicted on all charges for her role in the tragic crash at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County, which claimed the lives of 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and 4-year-old Zayn Phillips last April.
Marshella Chidester was found guilty of multiple offenses, including second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and five counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury. Several other people sustained injuries in the incident.
Jurors reached a verdict on Thursday after deliberating for two hours.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred on April 20, 2024, during a birthday celebration at the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township. A vehicle plowed 25 feet into the building, leading to the deaths of the two young children.
The trial commenced Monday at the Monroe County Courthouse. On Wednesday, the prosecution concluded its case following testimonies from investigators, witnesses, and the children’s mother. The defense presented its arguments and rested Thursday morning.
Prosecutors asserted that Chidester was under the influence at the time of the crash, citing witnesses who detected alcohol on her. Investigators revealed that tests indicated her blood alcohol content was 0.18, exceeding Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08. The defense, however, challenged the test’s accuracy, arguing that the blood samples were not properly mixed to activate the preservative.
Closing arguments wrapped up just before the lunch recess on Thursday, after which the jury received the case for deliberation.
