Esmeralda Montoya-Perez Obituary, Death; – The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has disclosed the identity of the officer involved in a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on February 28, along with the name of the deceased individual.
The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Esmeralda Montoya-Perez from Riverdale. The officer from the Hyattsville City Police Department involved in the incident is Private Carlos Flores, who has served for one year in the department and has an additional four years of prior experience. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Services Division.
As reported by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, Montoya-Perez was struck by a vehicle that was fleeing from police shortly after 10:15 p.m. on February 28. The incident began when the Hyattsville police officer attempted to stop a Lincoln sedan in the 3300 block of East-West Highway in Chillum. Investigators noted that the driver initially complied but then attempted to escape from law enforcement.
The officer pursued the vehicle for a brief distance on westbound East-West Highway before terminating the chase as both vehicles neared the intersection with 23rd Avenue. According to investigators, the sedan’s driver proceeded through the intersection, veered onto the shoulder of the highway, and collided with Montoya-Perez, who was standing on the side of the road. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Montoya-Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.
