MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The trial of one of three men, accused in the death of a mother of two, has started in Mecklenburg County court.
Adonis Smith was 17 years old when prosecutors allege he was involved in a shootout that left Kendal Crank, an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire, dead in March 2019.
The incident occurred along East 28th Street and North Tryon Street.
As Queen City News previously reported at the time, Crank was on her way to nursing school when she was shot and killed. The first two days of the trial have focused on opening statements and the state presenting its case.
Porchia Jordan, a friend of Crank’s, took the stand Tuesday morning. Jordan was in front of Crank as the shootout happened.
Through tears, she described what transpired at the intersection and recalled seeing blood on Crank’s dashboard, and Crank herself slumped over into the passenger seat.
Authorities say Crank was shot in the head during the shootout.
Tychius Dobie and Marquis Smith are also facing charges in Crank’s death.
A judge had previously ruled that all three men would not face the death penalty in this case.
