Robert S Rose Obituary, Death; – The family of a man fatally shot during a standoff in Dorchester County on Friday will address the media on Tuesday.
The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as 35-year-old Robert S. Rose from North Charleston. A statement from the National Racial Justice Network, which is organizing the press conference outside the North Charleston Police Department, characterized the victim as “mentally ill.”
The incident occurred at an apartment complex located on the 400 block of Wavery Park Lane in unincorporated Dorchester County, where deputies were dispatched. North Charleston Police assisted the deputies in what was described by police spokesman Harve Jacobs as a situation involving a barricaded individual. The North Charleston SWAT team also responded to the scene.
According to police, the man had attacked a Dorchester County deputy with a hatchet before barricading himself inside a residence.
Jacobs reported that the situation intensified around 3:55 p.m. when the suspect, identified as Rose, emerged from the home through a window, wielding a hatchet in each hand.
“Despite clear and repeated commands from our officers to drop the weapons, the subject did not comply. Consequently, our officers discharged their weapons to mitigate the threat to the surrounding public,” Jacobs stated. “The subject was struck, and our officers promptly rendered medical assistance.”
Rose was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m. at Trident Medical Center, according to Coroner Paul Brouthers. Dorchester County Sheriff’s spokesman Steven Wright noted that both the Department of Mental Health and their Mobile Crisis team were present at the scene to assist officers.
The deputy who sustained injuries earlier in the incident was treated for non-life-threatening wounds and has since been released from the hospital, Wright confirmed. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is conducting an investigation into the incident.
The press conference is scheduled for noon.
