MOORESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Lake Norman High School boys basketball season is over just hours before they were supposed to play in the third round of the state playoffs.
Iredell-Statesville Schools announced on Tuesday that Lake Norman suspended its program due to an eligibility issue. The district said the school discovered that an ineligible player had been included on the team roster, prompting “immediate action.”
The Wildcats were 27-1 and the 1 seed in the 4A West for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, having gone undefeated against in-state teams. They were set to host Myers Park Tuesday night.
LNHS Principal Bill Shapcott emphasized the school’s commitment to maintaining the program’s integrity.
“Our priority is to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and accountability in our athletic programs,” Shapcott said in a statement. “While this situation is challenging for everyone involved, we must adhere to NCHSAA guidelines.”
Last season, Lake Norman posted a 28-3 record, and fell in overtime to eventual state champion North Meck in the state semifinals.
Anyone who has already purchased tickets for the game against Myers Park will be eligible for a refund. The Lake Norman girls team will host North Meck Tuesday at 6 p.m.
