CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Looking to adopt a dog? A Charlotte area animal shelter is waiving adoption fees as it faces a critical space shortage in its dog kennels.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control has reported an overwhelming influx of dogs, with 33 new arrivals just on Monday, leaving only 13 available kennels at both the main shelter on Byrum Drive and the satellite shelter on Toomey Avenue.
As the shelter reaches capacity, there is a real risk of euthanasia to make room for animals, with the first rounds potentially happening as early as Tuesday afternoon.
In response to this emergency, ACC has announced a temporary adoption fee waiver to encourage residents to adopt and relieve pressure on shelter space.
Starting on Tuesday, adoption fees for dogs at both shelter locations will be waived through Sunday, March 9. However, prospective adopters are encouraged to make a donation to support shelter programs when adopting.
Ways to Help
For those unable to adopt or foster a dog, there are still ways to make a difference. ACC is offering an option to sponsor a dog’s adoption.
For those sponsoring adult dogs, the full adoption fee is as follows:
- Adult Female Dog: $118
- Adult Male Dog: $113
Partial sponsorships are also welcome, allowing people to contribute in a way that fits their budget. Those wishing to sponsor a specific dog can enter the animal’s ID (AXXXXXXX) on the donation page to ensure their support goes directly to the dog they wish to help.
