CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Lawmakers in the Carolinas want to bring the Department of Government Efficiency, known commonly as DOGE, to the state level. Republicans in North and South Carolina say they are now launching their own efforts to cut waste.
In Raleigh, House Speaker Destin Hall tapped state Reps. John Torbett and Keith Kidwell to lead the effort.
“The main mission of this group is to be for the people, the use of their tax dollars, hard-earned tax dollars, to be most effective, most efficient, and operate most expeditiously on behalf of the people of North Carolina. That should be the governing model,” said Torbett.
Membership is still being finalized but Torbett said the committee plans to hold open meetings with various state agencies looking for unnecessary spending or bureaucratic red tape. The committee will consist of both Democrats and Republicans.
“There are no targets, and there are no specific targets because we are going to look at each and everything that we possibly can,” added Torbett.
In the Palmetto State, the lieutenant governor and a group of state senators support the establishment of a 10-person commission. Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette described her vision during an interview with Queen City News earlier this month.
“Going into our agencies and trying to make sure we can, where can we be more efficient?” she asked. “Where can we put automation in place to help ease the workload for people and again, speed up government for the people it’s serving.”
A bill that would establish the commission is currently making its way through Columbia. Members would be appointed by the House, the Senate, the governor, and the Department of Administration.
Rep. Kidwell told Queen City News he hopes to finalize membership for the North Carolina committee by the end of next week.
