PAGELAND, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Pageland’s town administrator Shane Sligh says they’ve resolved a $106,000 clerical issue over federal taxes.
Sligh says on Monday, he got notice of an IRS tax lien topping $106,000 over the town’s alleged unpaid employee payroll taxes.
“As soon as I got a phone call that it was filed, I started checking to see what my finance director found out, make sure that everything had been filed. Her and I came to the office, and found all the paperwork to prove that had been filed,” Sligh said.
He says they called the IRS agent listed on the lien about the issue. Officials were told to fax the proper paperwork to the IRS office in Columbia.
“This is the ‘941’ that we file every quarter. On page three of this report shows the date that it was filed. On the front, we make a notation of the date we mailed it, which is within the timeframe of when it was supposed to be mailed. This here,” Sigh said pointing to the paperwork, “is the payments and this comes off of the IRS website.”
Records showing when quarterly payments were made. Transactions highlighted in yellow show the payments total up to 106,000. Sligh notes that the town’s numbers did not match the tax agency’s.
“Looks to be some kind of discrepancy there that we can clear up,” Sligh said.
Sligh says when the IRS got the correct paperwork, agents cleared the town of any tax discrepancies. Pageland officials were told the lien would be removed in 30 days, but the town is back in good standing.
York County accountant Mary Ann Castro says things like this happen often.
“They’re really clamping down on that because again, it’s not just an arbitrary amount taxed on an income. It’s money that you’re holding on their behalf, just like sales tax. Same with sales tax, they see it as a liability,” said Rock Hill accountant Mary Ann Castro.
Sligh says if neighbors still have questions or concerns, they can come to town hall to view the paperwork themselves but he’s happy they got in front of any possible issues.
QCN reached out to the IRS agents supervising the case at 3 p.m. Wednesday, but have not received a response.
The IRS placed a tax lien on Northeastern Technical College for nearly $30,000 in 2023 for unpaid employee payroll taxes as well. Documents show the college failed to pay for two separate tax filing years and the college had a $7,534.63 unpaid balance at the end of the tax period on September 30, 2021, and an unpaid balance of $19,415.89 at the end of the tax period on December 31, 2021 tax period.
The college paid the debt to the IRS and the lien was removed.
