Aaron Cole,Kelly Demings Obituary, Death; – The cause of death for the two men discovered deceased in a storm drainage tunnel in Midtown Fort Collins earlier this month has been established.
The Larimer County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims as Aaron Cole, aged 56, and Kelly Demings, aged 54, both residents of Fort Collins. The men were found lifeless in a tent located within a drainage tunnel beneath College Avenue, near Foothills Parkway, during the early hours of February 7.
According to an update on the coroner’s office website, it has been determined that Cole and Demings succumbed to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. A malfunctioning camping heater was located alongside the deceased, as reported by police to the Coloradoan on Thursday.
Authorities believe the men accessed the tunnel by crawling under safety gates at the entrance, as indicated in a prior news release.
The police stated that their Homeless Outreach and Proactive Engagement (HOPE) Team had previously reached out to these individuals in an effort to connect them with available city resources. Records obtained by the Coloradoan reveal that Fort Collins police officers had contacted Demings on 12 occasions and Cole on nine occasions between January 2024 and February 2025, although they were never contacted together.
