WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It could be the next chapter for an iconic and historic train station in NEPA.
Luzerne County Council’s Real Estate Committee agreed unanimously to possibly buy the historic former train station in Wilkes-Barre.
The station was built in 1868 and was used as a railroad station for 104 years.
The property was converted into a popular nightclub in the 80s before falling into a state of disrepair in the early 2000s.
The building has been rented by Luzerne County’s tourism office, Visit Luzerne County, since 2022.
But with the property currently up for sale, the tourism office’s future in this location is unclear.
“It’s on the national register of historic places, and so I tell our staff all the time ‘we’re in the business of promoting the attractions of Northeast Pennsylvania in Luzerne County. What better place to have our home than in an attraction? We actually have people that come just to see our building,” said Visit Luzerne County Executive Director Alan Stout.
Officials say the purchase of the building would put the county in a better financial position and ensure the protection of a historic landmark.
There is currently no set date as to when a decision will be reached to buy the building.
