CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 911 call from a stuck parachutist reveals the moments leading up to him being rescued from the side of an apartment building in Uptown.
Police say 31-year-old Diego Adame called 911 around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, asking for help after his parachute caught on the facade of the Museum Tower building on South Church Street.
“I’m suspended from the side of the building,” Adame can be heard saying in the 911 call.
A 911 operator then asked what happened. After a pause, Adame says, “I’m suspended with a parachute right now.”
Officials say Adame never explained how he got into this predicament. After some searching, crews found him stuck 100 feet in the air and hanging from a tangled parachute stuck.
“Are you doing OK, are you hurt?” another 911 operator says in the call.
“No (I’m not hurt), but if I fall it’s a lethal height so,” said Adame. “I’m above the valet parking.”
Firefighters worked to create a high-angle rope system to secure and at 1:43 a.m. Adame was brought to the rooftop uninjured. Following his rescue, Adame was arrested and charged with trespassing.
“Our firefighters train for these challenging rescues, and their professionalism was on full display,” said Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson. “This situation could have ended much differently, but thanks to their skill and teamwork, the individual was safely brought to safety.”
Charlotte Fire stressed that unauthorized parachuting or BASE jumping in urban areas is very dangerous and requires complex emergency responses.
