Darin Marquese Hall Obituary, Death; – An innocent bystander lost his life when he became caught in the crossfire during a shooting incident at a food court in an Alabama mall.
This marks the third deadly shooting at Western Hills Mall since 2018. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim on Monday as Darin Marquese Hall, a 32-year-old resident of Birmingham.
The gunfire erupted around 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Fairfield mall, situated on Aaron Aronov Drive. Approximately a dozen individuals were present in the food court, most waiting in line to place their orders, when a confrontation involving three men occurred, as reported by witnesses and captured on video.
One man, with his hand concealed beneath his shirt, was positioned on one side of the food court, while the other two men were on the opposite side, engaged in a dispute.
As one of the two men approached the first, he drew a firearm and opened fire. The man who had advanced fell to the ground but managed to rise again, appearing to be injured. The other man seemingly returned fire before fleeing the scene.
Patrons seated at three nearby tables sought cover, with two individuals running away and a woman dropping to the floor. Those in line, including Hall, also fled the area. A Fairfield firefighter, who was also in the process of ordering food, applied a towel to Hall’s wound in an attempt to stem the bleeding, as shown in a video that circulated on social media but was subsequently removed.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates reported that Hall was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:33 p.m. Yates noted that several individuals sustained injuries, although the precise number and severity of those injuries were not immediately available on Monday morning.
Initial reports indicated that one victim was transported to UAB Hospital, while it was later confirmed that another gunshot victim was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. The investigation is being led by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and no arrests have been made thus far.
Fairfield Mayor Eddie Penny stated on Sunday night that he was still in the process of gathering information and refrained from providing further comments. There have been previous shooting incidents at Western Hills Mall.
