LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County Commissioner Bill Gaughan announced his choice of who he would like to succeed former Commissioner Matt McGloin.
McGloin’s resignation is in effect as of Monday, February 24. Gaughan has proposed Dunmore Mayor Max Conway to the Lackawanna County Democratic Party Executive Committee as one of the options to fill McGloin’s position.
Under the county home rule charter, the Lackawanna County Democratic Party Executive Committee must present the county court of common pleas with three potential replacements by Friday, February 28. The court then will make an appointment based on that list.
McGloin, in his announcement to resign on February 21, urges the committee to honor Commissioner Bill Gaughan’s choice.
McGloin and Gaughan, both Democrats, were elected in 2023 and took office in 2024.
The new commissioner will serve the remainder of McGloin’s term, through 2027.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredible residents, business owners, and community leaders. Together, we’ve made real progress—working to revitalize downtown Dunmore, fighting blight, supporting our businesses, and improving public safety. We’ve attracted investments, strengthened connections, and tackled tough challenges like balancing public safety needs with limited resources. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, but I also see the opportunity to do more at the county level,” said Conway.
