Konoa Steven Wilson Obituary, Death; – Authorities released video footage on Friday depicting a police shooting that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy who was attempting to escape from a youth armed with a firearm, who had fired upon him moments earlier at Santa Fe Depot.
Although the police have not disclosed the victim’s name, his family has identified him to CBS 8 as Konoa Steven Wilson, a student at Bayside Community School in Logan Heights.
Officer Daniel Gold of the San Diego Police Department had just arrived in the vicinity for an unrelated matter when a fellow officer reported hearing gunfire at the historic Kettner Boulevard train station shortly before 9 p.m. on January 28, as stated by SDPD officials.
Prior to the gunfire, a surveillance camera recorded the teenager walking along a boarding platform towards a group of other youths, one of whom suddenly brandished a firearm and discharged at least two rounds at him before fleeing northward with an accomplice. In response, the targeted boy ran south and then east through an open corridor at the downtown depot in an effort to escape.
Officer Gold, meanwhile, rushed north towards the walkway with his weapon drawn and his body camera activated. As he arrived, the teenager appeared directly in front of him on a sidewalk on the east side of the station, prompting the officer to shoot him at close range.
The boy screamed and continued to run for a brief distance before collapsing. Officers immediately began administering CPR, during which they discovered a handgun concealed beneath the youth’s clothing near his right thigh, according to police reports.
Paramedics transported the teenager to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released. There is no evidence to suggest that the teenager discharged his firearm during the incident or was holding it when Officer Gold, a two-year veteran of the police department, opened fire.
Steven Wilson, the victim’s father, informed CBS 8 that his son was “a leader” who had never encountered legal troubles before. The family asserts that the incident “doesn’t make sense,” characterizing their son as someone who was not inclined to engage in trouble.
On Feb. 6, police arrested a suspect — another 16-year-old — in connection with the apparently non-injury gunfire that led to the police shooting, according to the SDPD. His name has been withheld because he is a minor.
