STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The doors of a historic church in Monroe County are now open for the first time in decades with a few upgrades.
The Stroudsburg Little Bethel Historical Association held its grand opening on Saturday at Little Bethel on North Third Street in Stroudsburg.
There the newly restored Stroudsburg Little Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was unveiled.
The AME church is now a museum and even features a lending library full of books both by and about African Americans.
The opening of the church during black history month was intentional as the church serves as a key piece in local black history.
“Although a lot of people are trying to hide true history, we need true history. And everyone needs to know what really has happened in the US, the good the bad, and the ugly,” said East Stroudsburg resident and event attendee Michelle Albritton.
Organizers say they are exploring more ways to raise money and continue restoring the church to its former glory.
You can learn some history or visit the lending library on Tuesdays between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Little Bethel AME in Stroudsburg.
