SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Outdoors near Clarks Summit was the place to be for a celebration on the ice during the final weekend of February.
Hundreds of people showed up on Saturday at Hillside Park for one last end-of-season skating celebration.
Volunteers helped make these weekend events happen since late December by lending ice skates, hockey sticks, and pucks at no charge.
The event began a decade ago to help the Lackawanna County Community shake off the winter doldrums.
“We’re cooped up all winter long and just being able to enjoy the outdoors even though the weather is a little bit chillier it’s a good feeling,” said Waverly resident Stephen Bernard.
“It’s really just fun to get out on a weekend, be outside, see how the community comes together to play some hockey or just learn how to skate,” Volunteer Conner Hiller explained.
This winter has been a banner season at Hillside Park.
Last year, the weather was too warm to hold this ice-themed event in the Abingtons.
