Chelsea Askew,Tammy Gibney Obituary, Death; – A teenager from East Texas has been charged with driving under the influence, failing to stop at a stop sign, and subsequently crashing into a van, which resulted in the fatalities of two women in September.
Ethan Luna, a 19-year-old resident of Tyler, faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of possession of a controlled substance, as of February 14. He was taken into custody at the Smith County Jail with a total bond set at $625,000, but he was released on the same day.
As detailed in an arrest affidavit, Luna was operating his truck on FM 2015 when he neglected to yield the right of way at the intersection with U.S. Highway 271 on September 14, 2024, leading to a collision with a Dodge Caravan traveling northeast on U.S. 271. His vehicle struck the van at an estimated speed of 65 mph.
Authorities reported that the driver of the van, Chelsea Askew, along with her passenger, Tammy Gibney, were both declared dead at the scene of the accident. During a search of Luna’s vehicle, investigators discovered beer cans and detected a strong odor of alcohol, in addition to a white powdery substance in a bag, which was later confirmed to be cocaine. A blood sample taken from Luna revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.169, which is more than double the legal limit.
An autopsy determined that both Askew and Gibney succumbed to blunt force trauma.
