The woman injured in Monday night’s fatal crash on Route 220 in Porter Township has been identified as Kari Greenaway, 53, of Lock Haven, according to Lycoming Regional Police. Authorities reported Wednesday that she was treated at UPMC Williamsport for her injuries.
Greenaway was driving south in the northbound lanes of the four-lane highway just before 7 p.m. when her Mercedes collided with a northbound Subaru Forester driven by 38-year-old Michael Kurelja, whose only known address was in Illinois.
Kurelja was pronounced dead at the scene, with an autopsy on Wednesday confirming that he succumbed to blunt force trauma, as stated by the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office.
Following the initial collision, Greenaway’s SUV struck a trailer being towed by a truck before overturning and catching fire, police said.
She managed to escape the wreckage and ran across the southbound lanes, where she was struck by the side mirror of a passing vehicle, according to authorities.
There were unconfirmed reports that she may have been hit by a second car, but police have not verified this as the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials are still working to determine where Greenaway entered the highway and began driving the wrong way. On Tuesday, investigators were exploring the possibility that she may have entered at the Thomas Street interchange, located east of the crash site.
