ST. CLAIR, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A mother is being charged after police say her 2-year-old got a hold of her gun and shot her.
According to the St. Clair Police Department, on January 31 officers were called to North Front Street for reports of a woman with a gunshot wound.
Through further investigation, police said 33-year-old Marissa Sheeler suffered a gunshot wound to the hand after her two-year-old found a 9mm Glock in Sheeler’s purse.
As stated in the affidavit, the toddler unintentionally discharged the weapon, hitting Sheeler in the hand. Investigators stated they later learned the child’s father “tested the strength” of the 2-year-old, allowing him to squeeze the trigger of the gun while it was unloaded.
Sheeler did not possess a valid concealed carry permit and the gun inside her purse was not properly secured, officers noted.
Sheeler has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, carrying a firearm without a license, and recklessly endangering another person.
