JERSEY SHORE, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Authorities in Lycoming County say an Illinois man is dead and another is injured after a crash Monday night on Route 220.
The Lycoming County Coroner’s Office says in a release they, along with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and the Lycoming Regional Police, were called Route 220 west of the Thomas Street Exit shortly before 8:00 p.m. Monday for a three-vehicle crash.
Officials say 38-year-old Michael Kurelja from Illinois was driving North on Route 220 when his Subaru Forester was struck nearly head-on by a Mercedes-Benz, which caused a severe entrapment.
When authorities from Jersey Shore arrived on scene, Kurelja could not be resuscitated.
Officials say the Mercedes-Benz that struck Kurelja’s car traveled further south in the northbound lane striking a truck towing a trailer and then rolled onto its roof before bursting into flames.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was able to pull themselves from the SUV and flee the scene on foot where they were later reportedly struck by other vehicles in the southbound lane before police made contact, the release said. Authorities say the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken to the Trauma Center at UPMC for treatment of their injuries.
Officials say an investigation into the incident is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Allentown.
