We start our Tuesday off chill as low 40s have taken hold and snow transitions into freezing rain for our mountain counties and higher elevations. Winds are light out of the east-northeast with clouds locked in from this Tuesday morning through mid-week.

Look for temperatures to slide into the upper 30s for much of Tuesday as rounds of light to moderate rain impact areas along the I-85 corridor. Points north will see more in the way of spotty freezing rain from I-40 and north towards our mountain counties.
We’ll see an Ice Storm Warning for Avery County last until 7 AM on Wednesday. Watauga & Ashe Counties will see a Winter Storm Warning through Wednesday afternoon, while the Piedmont and Western North Carolinas along the I-40 corridor will see a Winter Weather Advisory in place through 7 AM Wednesday.
Look for the heaviest rain and icy conditions to arrive later Tuesday evening and linger overnight into Wednesday. We’ll likely get the worst of the icy conditions Wednesday morning as the wet weather tapers off and the stationary front parked over the Carolinas starts to track north.
Temperatures will warm up heading into Thursday, with a line of heavy rain likely to kick off the second half of the work week. We can see between a glaze of ice and up to a quarter inch of ice accumulating from I-40 into our higher elevations.

In terms of rainfall, we can see upwards of an inch and a half to an inch and three-quarters through Thursday morning. Temperatures will rebound into the 60s with a surge of warm air pushing north.
