Faith Waterman Batistich, a 20-year-old from Te Puke, New Zealand, tragically lost her life after a party activity went horribly wrong during her daughter’s first birthday celebration.
Faith had joined other guests in a common party stunt—breathing in helium to create a high-pitched voice—after inflating balloons from a canister. Although initially hesitant, she eventually participated when encouraged by a fellow guest. Unfortunately, a fatal mistake occurred while she inhaled the gas directly from the canister.
Despite frantic efforts from her family to revive her, Faith was pronounced dead just an hour later. Her twin sister, Eden, recalled how the party had been filled with laughter as guests took turns inhaling helium, unaware of the danger. Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Eden described the moment her sister joined in and the heartbreaking final words she spoke before the tragedy unfolded.
Paramedics were unable to resuscitate Faith. Her sister, Eden, fondly remembered her as “bright and bubbly, just happy. Loud and obnoxious.” Officials have reiterated the serious risks associated with inhaling helium.
Coroner Louella Dunn determined that the 20-year-old was unaware of these dangers and emphasized that inhaling helium can be life-threatening. When inhaled in large quantities, helium can replace oxygen in the lungs, leading to low blood oxygen levels and potentially causing hypoxia, a critical condition. Coroner Dunn further noted that the risks are even greater when inhaling helium from a pressurized cylinder or canister, as the force of the gas allows a significant amount to enter the body quickly.
