A 59-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck in a hit-and-run incident Monday morning in Paterson.
According to the Paterson Police Department, Abel Herrera was clearing snow from his vehicle outside his home on Alabama Avenue when he was hit by a passing driver who fled the scene around 8:45 a.m.
Herrera was transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.Authorities are searching for the suspect and the vehicle, believed to be an SUV.
As the investigation continues, Herrera’s family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and suffering following such a devastating incident.
Legal experts emphasize that proving negligence in wrongful death cases requires experienced attorneys who can navigate the complexities of the legal process and support grieving families.
“Losing a loved one due to someone else’s negligence causes profound emotional trauma and can disrupt the lives of those left behind. Skilled lawyers can help families recover financially and work toward regaining stability.”
AAA said drivers could avoid hit-and-run crashes by being aware of their surroundings, yielding to crossing pedestrians even if they’re not in designated crosswalks, and giving cyclists “plenty” of space when passing them on the road.
