CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Tens of thousands of North Carolina voters are in limbo right now, waiting to see if their ballots will be counted for a North Carolina Supreme Court race.
A Wake County judge will hear Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin’s challenge of the ballots.
“Today it’s North Carolina, and next time it could be another state,” said Vicki Sykes, whose ballot is being challenged. “We could be setting a precedent here.”
Sykes is one of the more than 65,000 people in the Tar Heel State whose votes are in question. Griffin is working to get the ballots thrown out from the November election from his race against incumbent Democrat Allison Riggs. He claims clerical errors should discount the votes.

“I’ve been voting as long as I’ve been able to and have quite a bit of confidence in the system,” said Sykes. “This has been very stressful for myself and a lot of the other people that are on the list.”
Sykes is a poll worker in the eastern part of the state, so she considers herself familiar with the system.
“I brought my driver’s license, and I also brought utility bills to show that I do live at this address because my driver license address had not been changed,” she said.
About three weeks ago, she learned her name is on the list surrounded by others from every single North Carolina county.
“Some still don’t know that their name is on the list,” she said.
Sykes started reaching out to people in her area who are on it to let them know what’s happening. It’s her way of standing up for what she believes is right, as hundreds of people have gathered to protest across the state.
“This is not one that I want to be associated with or the state of North Carolina because I know they work hard to make sure that our votes are valid,” said Sykes. “Do something. We don’t have to be on the sidelines.”
