Ryan died by suicide on Tuesday in Nevada, according to the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner, which listed the official cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head.
The night before his passing, Ryan shared a video on his Instagram Story that appeared to show him at a bar. In the clip, he said, “Nine Fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking.”
The singer rose to fame as a contestant on season six of The Voice in 2014, where he performed Journey’s Lights during his blind audition and secured a spot on Blake Shelton’s team. Ryan advanced to the top five on Blake’s team, competing in several battle rounds and even performing in the season finale.
Born in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981, Whyte Maloney was a multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, violin, cello, and drums. He eventually became the frontman of the prog-rock band Indulge, releasing the album Tomorrow’s Another Day in 2005. After a decade of touring with the band, he transitioned to a solo career.
Maloney later recorded his debut solo album, Where I’ve Been, produced by Sean O’Dwyer (The Black Crowes, Roger Waters, Pink Floyd). Between 2010 and 2013, he toured nationwide while his original songs—”Hillbilly,” “Michigan Moonlight,” and “Living with No Directions”—received airplay on country radio stations in Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, and California.
