NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is looking to hire more employees in the name of reducing wait times for drivers.
Queen City News confirmed with DMV officials Tuesday a Charlotte Observer report that the agency aims to hire 61 people, focusing on the Triangle and Charlotte areas. The proposal was reportedly brought up during the Board of Transportation’s January meeting.
The General Assembly would have to approve the funding to increase the employee cap from 568 to 629.
The spokesperson said DMV also will ask to hire 29 driver’s license examiners to open new offices, including in Cabarrus County.
Queen City News reported in September that the wheels were in motion to respond to the growing lines that stemmed from a population boom.
In December the DMV added 69 drivers license examiners as part of a graduation ceremony. Five of these employees were assigned to Mecklenburg County offices, and another to the Concord office.
DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said then that the agency has hired more than 400 examiners in the last three years.
“We continue working to attract, hire, train and retain our employees while also introducing both more online technology options and seeking new examiner positions as we try to keep up with our state’s explosive population growth,” he said last month.
