TYLER, Texas (KETK) – On Tuesday, students and staff at Dixie Elementary School celebrated the school’s 100th anniversary on the 100th day of their school year.
The event featured former students who spoke about their memories while attending Dixie. The Dixie choir performed, and a time capsule was buried to commemorate the historic day.
Two Dixie alumni, Mia Mendoza and Yolanda Gomez, who are currently seniors at Tyler High School, shared memories of their time at Dixie and thanked their former teachers for helping them become the successful students they are today.
“Some of the best years of my life have been at this school, and I had so many great teachers,” said Yolanda. “I am in the top 10% of my grade with a GPA of 3.7, and I want to thank the school and all my teachers who helped make me who I am today.”
The principal of Dixie, Kimberly Simmons, spoke about reflecting on the impact Dixie has had on the community and how this day is meant to recognize those who have shaped the school’s community.
“Today is not just a celebration of our school’s history but a reflection of the students, families, and educators who have shaped our school community,” Principal Kimberly Simmons said. “We’re thrilled to share this day with those who have been part of Dixie’s legacy.”
A time capsule that was designed and constructed by students at the Career and Technology Center was unveiled during the event. Students from each grade contributed to the capsule, which was buried in front of the campus and marked with a permanent plaque.
