LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK)– The City of Longview collaborated with nonprofits to provide resources to the homeless in East Texas on Thursday.
The Longview homeless resource day was held at the Maude Cobb Convention center to provide a one-stop-shop with more than 70 booths including pet care, shelter information and health checks.
Event attendee and Longview resident, Dustin Ducker said it’s nice to not have to rifle through “stained hand-me-downs” and to actually feel like people care. Although Ducker was overwhelmed walking through the door, he was grateful for the people serving the community.
At the resource day, Ducker was provided a haircut, clothing, hygiene products, health care and so much more.
“Today’s event is all designed to bring services and resources together under one roof so the homeless can access whatever they might need to help them on their road to being home or housed,” Laura Hill, Director of Grant and Human Resources for City of Longview, said.
Hill explains that the homeless population is increasing in Longview with around 450 homeless people any given day. That is why the city organizes the homeless resource day for the seventh year.
The event’s goal is to help the community in time of need and to give some East Texans a way to a second chance.
“I’m just trying to pick myself back up again,” Ducker said. “I know I can do it, it just takes time.”
