CONOVER, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A suspect is in the hospital after an officer shot him following a domestic violence call early Friday morning.
According to the Conover Police Department, officers responded to Lylehaven Drive NW around 2 a.m. after a caller reportedly said her husband approached her with a knife. When they arrived, they located the male, Jason Welsey Ledford, in the area of County Home Road and Hefner Drive NW, less than a half-mile away.
Officers say Ledford, 45, of Cherryville, was armed with a knife and allegedly refused commands to drop the weapon while advancing on an officer. One officer fired at the subject striking him in the upper extremities. Officers took the subject into custody, began life-saving measures and called for EMS to respond to the scene for a gunshot wound.
Ledford was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center and later transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the State Bureau of Investigations findings.
