This is an updated release regarding the University Avenue and Coler Avenue crash on January 19, 2025, at 1:55 AM, Urbana Police Department said in a media release on Wednesday, January 22.
Today, around 9:26 AM, the United States Marshals Service based in Dallas, TX, located and captured Juan Jahaziel Saenz-Suarez, who was being sought by the Urbana Police Department. Saenz-Suarez, a 27-year-old Mexican national residing in Urbana, was identified through investigative leads as the owner/driver of the red Mitsubishi Outlander that caused the fatal traffic crash. The US Marshals Service located Saenz-Suarez in Milford, Texas, about an hour south of Dallas. Saenz-Suarez was riding an El Expreso bus destined for Matamoros, Mexico.
A Champaign County arrest warrant was issued on Monday, January 20, 2025, after Urbana Police Detectives determined his identity. This crash ended the lives of Chloe Polzin and Katherine Abraham and injured other passengers in the Honda Civic while it was slowing or stopped at the traffic signal on University Avenue at Coler Avenue. The Champaign County warrant charges Saenz-Suarez with Reckless Homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal injury crash.
The US Marshals Service leveraged their technological capabilities to track and locate Saenz-Suarez.
