MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Monroe Police Department is warning citizens to not leave their vehicles warming up unattended despite cold temperatures following a weekend car theft arrest.
On Jan. 12, around 6:53 a.m., Monroe officers responded to 1220 W. Roosevelt Blvd for a report of a stolen vehicle. An employee started her vehicle in the parking lot and left it to warm up. When she returned, her vehicle was gone.
Officers later found Justin Tyler Simpson, 20, inside the stolen vehicle at a Relax Inn.
Simpson was arrested and processed at the Union County Detention Center. He was charged with motor vehicle theft and received a $50,000 secured bond.
Monroe police want this incident to serve as a reminder when warming up your cars this winter that your vehicle would be a tempting target for thieves.
Here are a few ways to protect your vehicle:
- Start your car with a remote starter, if you have it, that requires the car to be locked.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for anyone suspicious
- Do not leave your vehicle running at a convenience store, as it is a quick and easy target.
